Be Seen to be Clean and Green

Print Bound’s website, www.cleangreenprint.com, is designed to educate consumers about the environmental impact of printing, provide direction for the industry in supporting a sustainable environment and create a forum for new ideas and initiatives. On a daily basis the company practices what it preaches.

“The principles of our Print Bound environmental system are to communicate, educate and update continually via staff briefi ngs, team meetings, internal newsletters and interactive posters throughout the business.” The company hasn’t always been green. The real shift came in 1995 when Mark Tomasini was awarded the MBA House of the Year for Environmental Effi ciency and Innovation.

“When Mark won the award we began to talk in earnest about how our business could be greener. In the first instance we looked at the processes we were using to identify areas where we could improve. The more we looked the more interested we got in the concept of going green. We decided we couldn’t go any further ourselves so we got an expert in to help us create an environmental management system.”

THE AWARDS ROLL IN

“Once the system was in place we were encouraged to take that step further. We created the website and started promoting Print Bound on an environmental platform, talking about our achievements and our results.”

The company has subsequently won the City of Whitehorse (its local council) Excellence in Business Award for contribution to environmental sustainability and most recently the Victorian Premier’s Award for Sustainability. “That was a real feather in our cap.” Transparency is vital in claiming environmental sustainability.

The company has opened its doors to the EPA who has conducted an audit of the Blackburn site and recommends it highly. “We have also been FSC certified,” states Mattarucco.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is the highest global standard in forest management practices. Mattarucco says there are only a couple of printers in Australia at present who are FSC certified. “Customers who use FSC paper are able to use the FSC logo on their printing. Overseas FSC certification is a real drawcard for many major corporations. With a global economy we expect this trend to escalate.”
